Over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend while many of us will be camping, fishing, hiking, swimming or having a cookout with family and friends, lets not loose sight of the true significance of this holiday...its much much more then an extended weekend. Memorial Day is a somber day to remember and honor the many men and women that have given the ultimate sacrifice to defend all that we hold dear: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
In honor of this special day, we have compiled some fun facts that you just may not have realized, did you know? Take a look

-Several towns claim to be the originators of Memorial Day, but in 1966 Congress declared Waterloo, New York, to be the birthplace of the holiday.
-Memorial Day originally honored military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861-1865).The holiday now honors those who died in any war while serving with the United States.
-Memorial Day was originally called and is also referred to as Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags.
-Americans are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m on Monday. This tradition was established in 2000 by then-President Bill Clinton, so people could "remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by so many to provide freedom for all."
-President Donald Trump, has issued his proclamation for this Monday. He is asking that flags be flown at half-staff until noon, and he is recognizing the 100-year anniversary of the U.S. entering World War I.
In closing, remember that freedom is never free so please take a moment this Monday May 28th 2018, to remember the fallen and to pray for lasting peace among nations.
